After winning 'the Battle of Ohio' against Adrien Broner on June 20th, Shawn Porter is still awaiting word on his next fight. His father/trainer Kenny Porter was hoping that they would get a crack at Danny Garcia, who stopped Paulie Malignaggi in nine rounds on August 1st.
"Danny Garcia did a video the week before the Paulie fight, basically saying that he's a better fighter than Shawn, he'd beat Shawn, and he would counter-punch Shawn and that was a tailor-made fight for him. So I took that as confidence that said he would take the fight," said Porter, who also manages his son.
"So we flew to New York and we rooted for him on the Malignaggi fight. We wanted him to be successful.
"He won the fight and after that I was ready to have a meaningful discussion about him and Shawn fighting but the only thing I got was, 'Hey man, you guys looked great in your last fight. Congratulations on all your success, good job,' But they didn't want none. They didn't want to discuss no fight with us. I don't see Danny taking it even though he said all those confident things and then at the press conference after the fight he says,'I'm a superior boxer to Shawn Porter, if he's butt-hurt by that, that's his problem.'"
Porter says that they showed up basically uninvited to the post-fight presser as they were told after that nights main event that there wouldn't be one.
"They obviously didn't want us to be at the press conference. There's no emotion on our part we just want to make the fight. Shawn wants to fight the best. Danny said a few things in that video that led me to believe he's confident but he must not be confident,"said Porter.
Garcia-Porter would be a fight that should be easy to make, at least in theory, given that both are advised by Al Haymon and associated with Premier Boxing Champions.
There has also been talk of a fight between Porter and Keith Thurman (who is also under the Haymon/PBC umbrella), who was also there that night in Brooklyn as Garcia defeated Malignaggi.
"Keith Thurman said he wanted to have a big fight before the year was over so I consider him and Shawn to be a big fight," stated Porter on Saturday afternoon. "So I made the call on that but I have not gotten any response."
