Piotr Wilczewski Wants George Groves For EBU Defense

By Terence Dooley

Poland’s EBU and WBO Inter-Continental super-middleweight titlist Piotr Wilczewski contacted BoxingScene.com to publically throw down the gauntlet to British and Commonwealth champion George Groves.  Piotr won the vacant European and WBO straps via an eleventh round TKO win over Amin Asikainen on March 4th – adding the two crowns to his IBO International 168lb belt.

Piotr moved to 29-1 (10) courtesy of the win, his only defeat coming at the fists of Curtis Stevens in New Jersey on July 11th 2009.  ‘Wilk’ is 32-years-old, the Pole claims that he had been lined up by James DeGale’s promoter Frank Warren as the Olympian’s next opponent had ‘Chunky’ triumphed over Groves.

George’s victory, coupled with his admission that he is eyeing the European and International scene has prompted the offer of an EBU title tilt from the Dzierzoniow-born bruiser.

“I was supposed to defend my EBU and WBO inter-Continental super middleweight titles versus James DeGale on 9 July.  George Groves won over DeGale and spoiled the deal,” revealed Piotr.

“If George has guts, and I am sure he has because only a brave man can win over James, then he will challenge me.  The ‘Wilk’ [Wolf] is ready to come to Britain, the Lion’s Den, and jump up to George’s throat to take his undefeated record.”

The O’Chikara Gmitruk Team guide Piotr; his handlers have contacted me repeatedly over the past week, insisting that they are willing to open negotiations for a potential fight.  Groves, 13-0 (10), is represented by Hayemaker Promotions, known for guiding their own destiny and forging their own path.

The two teams have yet to begin a dialogue.  However, the Piotr offer is a clear sign that Groves’ point’s win over his bitter London rival has made waves across Europe.  There was once a big, fat target on DeGale’s back, it would appear that it has shifted across to Groves.
