SANTA YNEZ, Calif. Promising Puerto Rican boxers Thomas Dulorme and Jonathan Gonzalez put their unbeaten records on the line against Aris Ambriz and Billy Lyell, respectively, in the co-featured 10-rounds bouts tomorrow/Friday, Feb. 17, on ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

Dulorme (13-0, 10 KOs), of Carolina, Puerto Rico, will face Ambriz (16-2-1, 8 KOs) of Azusa, Calif., for the vacant North American Boxing Federation (NABF) welterweight title in the main event at Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif. Gonzalez (14-0, 13 KOs), of San Juan, takes on Lyell (24-10-2, 5 KOs), of Youngstown, Ohio, in a 10-round junior middleweight match.

Dulorme (143 pounds), Ambriz (144 pounds) and Lyell (153 3/4 pounds) made weight on their initial attempts Thursday at Chumash. Gonzalez, making his first start since last June, tipped the scale at 157 on his first try, 1 pounds over the contracted weight. Gonzalez made weight -- 156 pounds on his fifth attempt, which was about 80 minutes after his first try.

What the fighters said Thursday:

THOMAS DULORME

Im thankful for all the awards Ive been getting, happy to finish school for now, and honored to be on SHOWTIME. As of right now, though, my total focus is on by boxing career. One of my dreams is to make it big in boxing and then go back to school.

I wasnt born in Puerto Rico but Ive lived there almost my entire life and I feel that the people there have accepted me. In my heart I feel I represent Puerto Rico each time I get into the ring and in everything I do.

Im fighting a different guy on short notice but I feel good about this. I was training for a left-hander but Ive always sparred against both so fighting a right-hander will be OK.

Ive gone the distance my last two fights, but they were both great learning experiences. I feel I got tested and taken into deep, deep water in my last fight against (Charlie) Navarro but I learned to swim that night.

ARIS AMBRIZ

I took this fight on one weeks notice, but was preparing for a fight in early March so I am OK. My conditioning is fine. I feel really good and this is a good weight for me. I accepted the fight without ever seeing Dulorme, but Ive watched tapes since and know he is a good fighter.

This is a big opportunity for me, the biggest fight of my life, so I am going to get in there and fight hard. I know I need to apply pressure and throw non-stop punches, but still be able to avoid his punches.

JONATHAN GONZALEZ

"This is my first fight since last June. I was scheduled to fight in November but got very sick and was in bed for two days. I probably still could have fought in November and I wanted to fight, but my team said no.

I went the distance in a fight for the first time in my last fight (against Richard Gutierrez on ShoBox) and Im happy that I did. I needed to prove to myself that I could do it. It was important for me to know I had the conditioning to do something I had never done before and thats go 10 rounds. I was happy with the fight and with my performance.

I feel I can do a lot of different things in the ring and on Friday I will just try and fight intelligently and win the fight round by round.

Im in against a good, tough opponent but I work hard every day for fights like this. I want to fight for a world title by early next year.

BILLY LYELL

Id never heard of Gonzalez but I saw in tapes that he was a good prospect who can punch a little bit. I was impressed.

Ive fought so many times in the local guys backyard, but this isnt like fighting in Germany or Mexico. Its not like Gonzalez is a hometown boy.

Im fighting for a ranking. One of the main things is to back him up and to be careful early. Im fighting at a lower weight, a great weight for me, so I think I may surprise a few people with my power.

Ive had a lot of fights and I have a lot of experience. But its not like Im 35. Im only 27 and still feel Im in my prime.

[QUOTE=jtcs1981]I've seen Mantequilla last three fights and he looks like that, with "los chichos". I cant believe he had to try 5 times to try make weight. I hope not, but he has the same attitude as Juanma. I hope he focus. I agree with Dulorme fighting at 140. He can make the weight. ...
