On Monday afternoon I swung by the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas and saw middleweight prospect J’Leon Love (13-0, 7 KO’s) in one of his final workout sessions prior to his upcoming fight this weekend. Love faces off with Tyrone Selders (8-3, 6 KO’s) on Saturday night in Humble, Texas in a bout that will be aired on FOX Sports Net, FOX Deportes, and FUEL TV.
Typically one to hit the gym around 2:30 pm, Love arrived a little early on this day and was seen in the back of the facility finishing up his regimen around 3 pm as he went through a mitt routine with outspoken trainer and former two-division champion Roger Mayweather.
Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Love moved to Vegas late last year and got close to Floyd Mayweather Jr. after serving as one of his sparring partners as he readied to face Miguel Cotto.
Having watched Love go some rounds with his nephew, Roger instantly spotted his potential.
“He’s got tremendous boxing ability,” Roger would say of Love. “I know that, because I’ve seen him. I know that because I’ve seen him before. I already told him ‘You are the best fighter in this gym besides my nephew’”.
Love noted that his corner will still remain the same this weekend, with Nelson Figueroa and Angel Caivallo, whom he has worked with since his amateur days, joining strength and conditioning coach Bob Ware.
Roger’s pre-fight routine was simply to add a few wrinkles, claims Love.
“Roger is one of the best trainers in the world,” stated Love. “To add a little flavor of what he has to our style, I think we can do great things.”
