According to promoter Lou DiBella, and adviser Sampson Lewkowicz, WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez went to see a specialist earlier today and it was confirmed that he suffered a broken left hand during Saturday's twelve round decision victory over Martin Murray at Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield in Buenos Aires, Argentina. DiBella says Martinez broke his hand in the second round, after landing a punch on Murray's elbow. Both the promoter, and his adviser, said the injury "is likely" to keep Martinez on the shelf for the "remainder of the year." Martinez may have also re-injured his right knee; the same knee that required surgery in the aftermath of last September's win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Dr. Jose Vals & Dr. Raquel Bordons informed Lewkowicz that Martinez has a carpal large bone compression fracture. He was told to wear an inmobilization splint for 45 days and then go through subsequent rehabilitation for 60 days. And then the hand will be evaluated to see how well it healed.
