ESPN reported on Wednesday that discussions are underway for a potential clash between undefeated WBA/IBF/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (26-0-1, 23KOs) and former champion Jean Pascal (29-2-1, 17KOs). The potential fight may not be possible until the second half of 2015 because of mandatory obligations that Kovalev may have to fulfill.
According to the article, Pascal's team is pushing for Kovalev-Pascal to take place in Montreal where Pascal is a big draw. Pascal must first get past Roberto Bolonti on December 6th for a fight to be possible.
BoxingScene.com spoke to Jean Pascal Promotions CEO, Greg Leon, to get his take on the potential fight.
"I am of the opinion that Kovalev-Pascal is the best light heavyweight fight that can be made without the complications that come with dealing with Adonis Stevenson. Pascal is obviously an elite level option for Kovalev, where all discussions have been positive thus far and as the mandatory challenger to Stevenson, Jean is in a very good position. However none of these attractive opportunities matter one bit until after Jean Pascal takes care of his business with Roberto Bolonti. First things first," Leon told BoxingScene.com.
