Ovill McKenzie is ready to cause another shock by snatching away Victor Emilio Ramirez's IBF cruiserweight title on Friday night. Jamaican-born hard-hitter McKenzie is in the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires where he faces an arduous task against hometown hero and two-time world champion Ramirez (22-2-0). With 12 career losses, McKenzie (25-12-0), who took the fight at just 11 days' notice, is the underdog but says he will draw on the experience of becoming Prizefighter champion in 2009, where he stunned the field after being drafted in two weeks before the event.

Frank Warren on Ramirez-McKenzie, Bruno, More

Talking of Frank Bruno, like everyone in boxing I am saddened that he is back in hospital having treatment after apparently struggling with a severe bout of depression for several weeks. It is such a shame that one of Britain’s best-loved sporting icons, who suffers from bi-polar disorder, should again be experiencing these mental issues. I’ve always felt that it has not been to do with the actual boxing, but some of the things surrounding it, such as when Lennox Lewis and then Oliver McCall called him an Uncle Tom. I think that shattered him. It really affected him and maybe he has never really got over it.

BoxingScene understands that talks are underway between the representatives of Ola Afolabi, 21-4-4 (10), and Ovill McKenzie, 24-12 (12). The cruiserweights are in discussion for a summer showdown and hopefully there will be official news soon about the mooted 200lb encounter. If made, the bout could help Afolabi get right back into contention following April’s decision defeat to Victor Emilo Ramierz for the IBF's interim title. The 35-year-old has had a staccato schedule in recent years, fighting once thus far in 2015, once in 2014 and twice in 2013. You have to go back to 2011 to find a fairly active year for the former WBO interim titlist—three fights and three wins.

Harrow Weald’s unbeaten Mitchell Smith believes that reducing his frame is going to significantly increase his chances of crashing the major title scene in 2015. The 22 year old ‘Baby Faced Assassin’ copped rave reviews racing to 10-0 and a world rating with the WBO in the 130lb super-featherweight class. “Overall, 2014 was a good year for me,” reflects the Jason Rowland trained starlet who kick starts his 2015 campaign with a six rounder at the now sold-out York Hall, Bethnal Green this Friday, live and exclusive on BoxNation, headlined by Ovill McKenzie’s British and Commonwealth Cruiserweight title defence against Matty Askin. “Though I only had three fights because of a strained stomach muscle and a knee operation, I boxed very sensibly in all three and won the English and WBO European titles plus earned a world ranking. In those title fights against Peter Cope and Zoltan Kovacs, I won all 20 rounds on at least one judges’ card. That proved the step up in class definitely didn’t faze me.”
