Ortiz Has No Interest in Berto Rematch, Only Mayweather

By Luis Sandoval

From the sound of it, Victor Ortiz has the rest of the year planned out as Golden Boy announced he will be fighting Saul “Canelo” Alvarez should he defeat Josesito Lopez on June 23rd.

Ortiz was reluctant to talk about Alvarez until he takes care of business of June 23rd first but he did talk about Andre Berto and his last opponent Floyd Mayweather Jr when he stopped by BoxingScene.com’s official radio show The Boxing Lab.

As it’s been well documented, his rematch with Berto fell apart for a second time when Berto failed his drug test administered by VADA leading up to their fight. Both men put on a Fight of Year when they clashed in 2011 but it doesn’t appear we will be seeing a sequel to the fight anymore. Ortiz was asked if he would still consider pursuing a rematch with Berto sometime down the line.

“You know, I actually don’t have anything to prove to Berto besides putting him to sleep on a second occasion. The only reason I agreed to ever fight him to begin with was because there was a promise and a clause that if I beat Berto again, I would fight Mayweather. So I was all for it 110%” explained Ortiz.

“And now that there’s none of that going on, he doesn’t deserve a chance. He doesn’t deserve an opportunity. He was falsely a champ for a long time in my eyes”.

A fight however that Ortiz would like a second crack it is with pound for pound kingpin Floyd “Money “ Mayweather. The controversial ending to that fight is still one Ortiz feels left unfinished business between both combatants and is a fight he’d like a chance to correct.

“I believe what you’re saying right now” said Ortiz regarding a comment that we never got to see his fight with Floyd play out completely.

“I strongly believe I have unfinished business with Floyd. I’m sure Floyd knows it too, he just tries to say he doesn’t. At the end of the day though, the Floyd thing and everything is not what I’m working for right now. Josesito Lopez on June 23rd is and that’s what it’s going to be until June 23rd”.
I dont blame him about not wanting to fight Berto he basically lost 8 months of his career waiting on Berto before he blew the fight for good.
Seriously...Berto has cost him possibly millions.
