Afolabi Has Made Many Adjustments For Huck Trilogy

Ola Afolabi has come up short in each of his two attempts at wresting the cruiserweight crown from Marco Huck. The British cruiserweight hopes the third time is a charm when the pair meet once again on June 8 in Germany. Their rematch last May ended in a draw, also serving as Afolabi’s last ring appearance as he has been out of the ring for more than a year. The tie verdict was debatable but generally viewed as a fairer outcome than was the case in his disputed points loss to Huck in Dec. ’09.

The wait for Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25 KOs) is almost over. On June 8, the current WBO Cruiserweight Champion will lace-up his gloves for the very first time in his home city of Berlin, Germany after two and a half years on the road. The 28-year-old will take on interim-titlist Ola Afolabi (19-2-4, 9 KOs) at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in his eleventh defense of his belt and the third against the Brit. “All good things come in threes”, said Huck, who is currently in the hot phase of his preparations. “So far Afolabi hasn’t been able to find a way to beat me and it won’t be any different this time round.” And of course the prodigy of Ulli Wegner wants to prove that he does not just talk the talk but also walks the walk. Hence, he will not be holding back during this week’s training as the sparring has just begun.

It is now clear: the trilogy fight between WBO champion Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25 KO's) and interim titlist Ola Afolabi (33 years, 19-2-4, 9 KO's) will take place in Berlin on June 8th at the Max-Schmeling-Halle. Both opponents first fought in December 2009, and Huck won a close fight with scores of 115:113, 115:113 and 116:112. In April 2012, they met again in Erfurt and fought to a twelve round draw (114:114, 114:114 and 115:113).

A decision has been made! Sauerland Event has been awarded the right to host the hotly anticipated fight Marco Huck vs. Ola Afolabi III. Originally Don King won the purse bid for the WBO Cruiserweight World Championship on February 26 by offering 1.5 Million US-Dollars. However, the 81-year-old wasn't able to clear the necessary details within a set period of time and couldn't find a TV-Partner to broadcast the fight. Therefore, the World Boxing Organization handed the right to the second highest bidder, Sauerland Event, who made a bid of 914,000 US-Dollars.

In late February, promoter Don King threw down a bid of $1.5 million to secure the promotional rights to the trilogy between Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25 KOs) and Ola Afolabi (19-2-4, 9 KOs). He bid well above Sauerland Event ($914,444), who promote Huck, and K2 Promotions (375,000), who have Afolabi. Promoter Kalle Sauerland has expressed its concern over this matter, because King has yet to finalize a date, venue and the most important factor - a television deal. If King is unable to stage the fight, then Sauerland as the second-highest bidders will secure the promotional rights.

Promoter Don King is considering the possibility of staging a cruiserweight doubleheader in Moscow, Russia. King put down large amounts of money to win two significant purse bids in the last few weeks. He was by far the highest bidder in both fight auctions. He bid $712,000 to gain the rights to WBA mandatory title fight between champion Denis Lebedev (25-1, 19 KOs) and mandatory challenger Guillermo Jones (38-3-2, 30 KOs). Then he big $1.5 million to secure the promotional rights to the WBO mandatory fight between champion Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25 KOs) and mandatory Ola Afolabi (19-2-4, 9 KOs).

According to Chris Meyer, general manager for Sauerland Event, promoter Don King slammed down a bid of $1,500,000 million dollars to secure the promotional rights to the Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25KOs) vs. Ola Afolabi (19-2-4, 9KOs) trilogy match. Sauerland Event, who promote WBO cruiserweight king Huck, put down $914,444, K2 Prootions who handle Afolabi, put in a bid of $375,000.
