O. Figueroa-Salcido Added to Broner-Escobedo Card
By Ryan Maquiñana
Unbeaten lightweight prospect Omar Figueroa will fight Dominic Salcido on the July 21 Adrien Broner-Vicente Escobedo undercard, according to Figueroa’s trainer, Joel Diaz.
The Golden Boy-promoted show will take place at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio, with the main event being televised by HBO.
“Omar Figueroa has what it takes to be a world champion,” Diaz said. “Ever since I started working with him, I’ve been working more on improving on what he does well, like switching from righty to lefty, rather than changing him. If it works, no need to change it.”
Figueroa (18-0-1, 15 KOs), of Weslaco, Tex., has stopped his last four foes within two rounds. Salcido (18-3, 9 KOs), from Rialto, Calif., has split his last six fights, but has been inactive since a majority decision defeat to Eloy Perez.
“I actually used to train Dominic,” Diaz added. “I also train Vicente, and he’s knocked him out before, and so I know a lot about Dominic. Omar’s had a great camp and he’s ready for this opportunity.”
They should throw him in with a Paris or Gesta level type fighter, if he wins then bring on Herrera or Guzman. He could be champ by next summer if they move him right and keep stepping up the comp.
…Comment by UTEP on 07-08-2012
Figueroa is 22, he SHOULD be staying active, especially since he's stopping guys left and right with ease. Hopefully by next year, the quality of opposition will have noticeably increased. I would love to see him in there with Herrera/Paris/Gesta/Guzman.…Post a Comment/View More User Comments (11)
