Nadjib Mohammedi: record, next fight and profile →
Moscow, Russia - Former light heavyweight world title challenger Nadjib Mohammedi should have had a hugely successful return to the super middleweight class with a career-lifting decision over former Super WBA champion Fedor Chudinov but... instead he became the victim of a highly controversial split decision loss, which has infuriated the crowd.
As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, former World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight champion Fedor Chudinov will return to the ring on July 21 at Olympic Stadium in Moscow, Russia. Chudinov will face Frenchman Najib Mohammedi, according to Vasily Konov.
WBA super middleweight champion Tyron Zeuge´s convincing win over mandatory challenger Isaac Ekpo this past weekend has opened the door for a big domestic showdown against former world titleholder and current IBF I/C king Vincent Feigenbutz and it appears to be a natural and a big fight for the German market.
Former WBA "regular" super welterweight champ Jack Culcay has, as previously reported, left Sauerland Event - and BILD writes that "Golden Jack" has now signed with Agron Sports, a newcomer to professional boxing, headed by German millionaire Ingo Volckmann.
France - With a couple of crushing kayo losses to reigning multi-title light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (KO 3) and talented up-an-comer (of the Ukraine Olympic squad) Alexander Gvozdyk (KO 2), formerly world-rated Frenchman Nadjib Mohammedi was in bad need of a positive result.
French light heavyweight Nadjib Mohammedi (37-5) is as motivated as ever to continue his career despite back to back knockout losses to Sergei ”Krusher” Kovalev and Oleksandr Gvozdyk reports netboxe.com. Next step for Mohammedi is to move down to super middleweight.
In an intriguing battle of undefeated welterweights with big implications, Konstantin Ponamarev (30-0) defeated Brad Solomon (26-1) via split decision in a bout he appeared to dominate. The North American Boxing Federation welterweight title holder was the aggressor throughout the fight, peppering Solomon with hard shots to the body and face.
This past Saturday night, WBA, IBF and WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (28-0-1, 25 KOs) crushed his IBF mandatory challenger Nadjib Mohammedi (37-4, 23 KOs) of France within three painful (for the Frenchman) rounds. After the fight he talked to Konstantin Ustyantsev of the Championat about his latest ring appearance.
Sergey Kovalev continues to struggle as a box office draw, but remains one of the most watched fighters on cable television. Proof on the latter is found in the unified light heavyweight titlist’s recent 3rd round knockout win over mandatory challenger Nadjib Mohammedi. The July 25 HBO-televised averaged just north of 1 million viewers (1.014 million) over the course of less than nine minutes of ring action. The number is down from his past two bouts, which is to be expected. However, it fared better than a similarly (mis)matched bout around this time last year, when his 2nd round knockout of Blake Caparello played to less than 1 million homes.
It looked like a standard ‘win a bunch of non-descript fights to move up’ mandatory challenge going in. It played out as less than that in the ring. There was at least some hope the awkward approach of Nadjib Mohammedi could give the fight a couple competitive rounds. Kovalev has seen awkward before. He obliterated it on Saturday. Sergey Kovalev is no worse than 1A at Light Heavyweight. The politics of keeping belts means sometimes sitting through this sort of thing.
