Hall of Fame trainer Nacho Beristain, who is best known for training four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez, says Saul 'Canelo' Alavrez (47-1-1, 33KOs) made the right decision in vacating his belt.
Canelo was ordered by the World Boxing Council to make a mandatory defense of his WBC middleweight strap against IBO/IBF/WBA rule Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs).
The purse bid was scheduled for May 24th in Mexico City. But on Wednesday Canelo made the decision to vacate his belt, which then got turned over to Golovkin by the sanctioning body.
Because of Canelo's ability to draw money with tickets, pay-per-view and produce high television ratings - Nacho would not advise his management to match the 25-year-old Mexican star against Golovkin right now.
"I think Golovkin has a good chance of beating Canelo right now. And nobody understand the joke of making a fight at a catch-weight when the division limit is 160 pounds, but if I were his manager I would look elsewhere because because Canelo is a cashier's check - he sell a lot of tickets, and perhaps should be gaining more than what he earns," Nacho told ESPN Deportes.
"I think they are doing well. If it was my fighter I would not put him in the ring with Golovkin right now. Canelo is a great fighter, he's a fighter who has the ability to sell, the people want him, and his career should be handled with intelligence to continue to do what they are doing."
