Hall of Fame trainer Nacho Beristain is giving WBC/WBA junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs) a very good shot to pull off the upset on Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
"Although the logical choice will be Mayweather [to win], but I think Canelo has the opportunity of a lifetime. You can not rule out the possibility of [Canelo getting the] victory. And if he achieves it, it would give a great gift to the Mexican fans," Nacho said.
"It is a fight where one boxer is going to be defensive, but does things very well, and he is designated as the best in the world - against an opponent who is spectacular, offensive - and we should expect a great fight. Technically, I think Saul can aspire to win should he throw more punches in combinations. He can do it, because he is becoming a great fighter. Saul must throw more than three punches at a time, use the jab, throw the right and then repeat the combinations"
The only thing that worries Nacho is the officiating. He doesn't want to have flashbacks of how Juan Manuel Marquez was unable to get a decision against Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas.
"If Canelo wins the fight, wins the decision...will he get it? Are the judges going to give the victory to the Mexican and bypass the prestige of Mayweather? It could happen [where Canelo is robbed]. The same thing happened to Juan Manuel Marquez, who never got a decision over Manny Pacquiao and had to knock him out to be the winner," Nacho said.
