Nacho Beristain, longtime trainer of Juan Manuel Marquez, was asked Wednesday for his thoughts about Floyd Mayweather’s May 3 welterweight unification showdown with Argentina’s Marcos Maidana.
Beristain had a ringside seat for the most lopsided decision defeat of Marquez’s career; his fighter was floored in the second frame and lost by double digits on two of the three cards (the third margin was in Mayweather’s favor by nine points).
Thus, it comes as no surprise that Beristain predicts another victory for the American universally recognized as boxing’s pound-for-pound king.
“I believe Mayweather is from another galaxy,” Beristain told reporters at a press conference announcing Marquez’s May 17 clash with Mike Alvarado at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif.
Beristain elaborated on his ethereal classification for Mayweather’s skills.
“(Mayweather) is a completely different fighter than Maidana,” Beristain added. “He’s a complete, defensive fighter. Argentine fans, forgive me, I respect Maidana, but I think he is going to be beaten.”
Note: Miguel Sandoval translated Beristain’s words from Spanish.
