Arlington, Texas - In a battle of undefeated lightweights, Ismail Muwendo (17-0)dominated Rolando Chinea (10-1-1) over 8 rounds en route to an eyebrow raising majority decision victory. Muwendo, who is part of Terence Crawford's camp, started fast and never took his foot off the gas. Chinea was cut and bloodied early on but was able to make it to the final bell. The final scores were a very questionable 76-76 along with 78-74 and 79-73. Boxingscene.com scored it 79-73.
Local favorite Skender Halili (8-1) lost in front of his hometown crowd against San Antonio rival Benjamin Whitaker (9-1). Both welterweights came out firing punches but neither fighter was able to ever get his opponent in series trouble. Whitaker's speed proved to be the difference and won by the tallies of 80-72, 78-74 and 79-73.
Light heavyweight prospect Medzhid Bektemirov (16-0) impressed with a dominant decision victory over Michael Gbenga (16-19). The Ronnie Shields trained Bektemirov came out aggressive and took the fight right at his overmatched but tough as nails opponent. Gbenga absorbed some hellacious shots but never went down during the 8 round bout. The final scores were 80-72 twice and 79-73.
Recent Top Rank signed Anthony Barnes improved his record to 8-0 wen he defeated Martinez Porter (3-4-4) via unanimous decision. Barnes, from Huntington Woods, Mich. came in sporting the Kronk colors of the late Emmanuel Steward's famed gym. Porter was a game opponent but Barnes simply had the better skills and that proved to be the difference in the fight. The final scores were 59-55 twice and 58-56.
Later tonight Terence Crawford will face Thomas Dulorme for the vacant WBO super lightweight title in the first fight if a split site doubleheader. Ruslan Provodnikov-Lucas Matthysse will take place immediately after from Verona, NY.
In the opening bout from the University of Texas at Arlington, Eddie Tigs (1-5-3) and Mike Tufariello (4-2-2) battle to a 4 round draw in their middleweight bout. The scores were 38-38 on all three cards.
