Moscow Bits: Chisora Speaks, Jones, Hryunov and More

By Alexey Sukachev

He is scandalous, he is flamboyant, and he is cocky. But he is also ready to impress Russian fight fans with something positive, which was a rare gesture from him in the recent memory. Dereck Chisora, without a license but with his handler Frank Warren, enjoys his status as one of the sport’s most controversial stars here in Moscow.

Chisora has spoken a bit about his present feelings and about his present status with Nikita Lukyanov from “Sport-Express”, one of the state’s most known sportive dailies.

- What do you want me to do?! Do you want me to run naked around the city? I’m here because I’ve been invited here by my friend Vlad [Hryunov]. I want to watch Lebedev-Cox fight live. I’ll root for whoever wins this one. And Lebedev will win it. I suppose he will knock his opponent really quick.

- What do you know about Lebedev?

- I saw one of his fights several years ago. However, truth be told, I haven’t seen him in the ring recently. But I know he is a good, strong fighter, and I know that we are teammates.

- What will you see here, in Russia? Are you here to do some sightseeing?

- To the truth, I intended to visit Siberia firstly but then I changed my plans. I want to see a huge, big dog. I don’t remember its name but maybe it’s a Siberian shepherd. But my primary goal is to see some fighting here.

- Your promoter Frank Warren has filed an official protest to prevent your disqualification. When shall we see you in the ring again?

- I don’t know, and I have nothing to say about it. I want to compete but for now I’m forced to see the other guy fighting and to train hard in the gym.

- Many think that after all the fuss and scandals with you during Vitali fight you’ve received a number of commercial proposals. Is it true?

- No, there aren’t many. You know, I don’t like paperwork. I’m an athlete and I want to fight.

- What do you think of Russian fighters?

- I’m ensured that it doesn’t mean anything if you are Russian, British or American fighter. What only means is how you have been training for eight weeks before your fight. I don’t see any differences here in Russian boxers.

Meanwhile, Chisora hasn’t anything against obtaining the Russian boxing license.
“That’s fine for me”, he said during his press briefing. “If they [Professional Boxing Federation of Russia] grant me with a license, I’ll be glad to compete with it”. According to the rules of the PBFR, it’s not forbidden to grant a license to a foreigner.

Both Roy Jones and Dereck Chisora not only entertained local fans and casuals but they have also helped young boxers from the satellite city of Balashikha.

Jones Jr., Chisora and Vladimir Hryunov, a promoter of the event, took their parts in a grand opening of Victor Ageev’s amateur boxing tournament. Ageev is the president of the PBFR, and he is also known as one of the superstars of soviet boxing, having won two European and four domestic middleweight titles during the sixties.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“That’s one of the happiest days in my life”, said Vladimir Hryunov in his video interview to Allboxing.ru after the presser in Las Vegas Resort and Trade Center. “Roy Jones, Kostya Tszyu and Dereck Chisora are real stars of boxing, and you’ll see them live at Crocus City Hall on April 4. There are almost no tickets remained, and I expect a sell-out crowd at the arena. But what delights me most is that our children, our young stars of boxing will see their idols with their own eyes. That is what makes me think about the future of boxing and how bright it will be in this country”.
