Moises Flores: record, next fight and profile →
The World Boxing Association is moving forward to strip Cuban boxer Guillermo Rigondeaux of his WBA super bantamweight world title. Last Saturday night at The Theater in Madison Square Garden in New York City, Rigondeaux moved up two weight divisions to challenge Vasyl Lomachenko for the WBO super featherweight title.
As expected, the WBA announced Wednesday it has ordered a Guillermo Rigondeaux-Moises Flores rematch. The Panama City-based sanctioning organization’s ruling came eight days after the result of their 122-pound title fight was changed from a first-round knockout win for Rigondeaux to a no-contest by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The WBA gave representatives for Rigondeaux and Flores 30 days to come to an agreement on contractual terms for an immediate rematch.
The normally mild-mannered Cuban trainer, Pedro Diaz, recently expressed his dismay at the actions of HBO commentator Jim Lampley subsequent to Guillermo Rigondeaux’s fight against Moises Flores on June 17. Originally, Rigondeaux was declared the winner by knockout after he floored his Mexican opponent with a left hand at the end of the first round. On review the Nevada Commission changed the result to a no decision.
Dino Duva didn’t use the “F” word. Then again, it wasn’t really necessary. Duva, an executive for Roc Nation Sports (Rigondeaux’s promoter), made it perfectly clear Monday that the handlers for Guillermo Rigondeaux believe Moises Flores was faking June 17 in Las Vegas.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission voted unanimously during a Monday morning meeting to change the result of the Guillermo Rigondeaux-Moises Flores fight to a no-contest. Rigondeaux originally was declared a winner by first-round knockout June 17 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The NSAC changed the result to a no-contest because video and audio evidence proved Rigondeaux’s fight-ending left hand clearly landed after the bell sounded to end the first round.
While you naturally have to afford Andre Ward huge credit for now twice toppling the previously formidable force of Sergey Kovalev, it remains the case that he hasn’t quite put the matter to bed. I suspect a third meeting between the pair is inevitable because, once again, the finish wasn’t clear cut and there was an air of controversy wafting around the Mandalay Bay hotel on Saturday night.
There was more than enough controversy on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The first stint of controversy of the night, WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux retained his world title with a first round knockout of undefeated mandatory challenger Moises Flores.
Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, Nevada - On Saturday night, two-time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux retained his super bantamweight title on a first-round knockout over Moises "Chucky" Flores when he landed a punch after the bell. Rigondeaux and Flores were trading punches when the bell rang to end the first round and both threw after the bell. Rigondeaux's punch landed, and Flores dropped to the canvas where he was counted out.
Guillermo Rigondeaux Video Interview - Olympic gold medal winner Andre Ward has stopped Russian puncher Sergey Kovalev in the eighth round to win their rematch and retain his unified light-heavyweight world championship. The 33-year-old Ward extended his perfect record to 32 wins in an impressive performance, albeit with a controversial ending, at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
