WBC lightweight champion Mikey Garcia (36-0, 30 KOs) is still a promotional free agent since breaking his promotional contract with Top Rank last year.

The two sides were in litigation for two years before parting ways.

Since that long legal process, Garcia has been very reluctant to sign a new promotional agreement. He doesn't want to commit to anybody unless the agreement is satisfactory with all of the bells and whistles.

Regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in boxing, Garcia has no shortage of promoters who are attempting to sign him up.

He recently held talks with Golden Boy Promotions and received a good offer from company CEO, Oscar De La Hoya. Garcia also received a good offer from Richard Schaefer.

Schaefer, who was the former CEO and co-founder of Golden Boy, created a new promotional company called RingStar Sports in 2016 and he's been signing up numerous Olympians and prospects in the last few months.

“I’m still a free agent but we spoke to Golden Boy a few weeks ago and [Oscar De La Hoya] presented something for me that’s very interesting,” Garcia told CBS Sports. “We weren’t able to lock anything in because of time scheduling for the fight he was showing me, but we talked to him. Richard Schaefer is still very interested. He presented a very good offer but we are still talking.”

Garcia is looking to avoid any long term agreements. He wants to do a few fights here and there - to avoid the possibility of being locked in to one promoter for several years and the promoter in question is not doing business with certain competitors.

“If I lock myself in with a promoter for five years and he’s not doing business with anybody else, then I missed out on other opportunities at other fights,” Garcia said. “I can go look at two fights or three fights with one promoter. I could also look at three fights with a different promoter to balance out which side I would rather work with it. If it’s a one-off first to test the waters, I might do that.”
