Former two-division world champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28KOs) recently announced his return to the ring on July 30 in New York City, when he faces Elio Rojas in Showtime televised fight as part of the Leo Santa Cruz vs. Carl Frampton undercard at the Barclays Center.
It's the first fight for Garcia since a victory over Juan Carlos Burgos in January 2014, which also took place in New York City.
Garcia sat down with Jorge Eduardo Sanchez and Juan Manuel Marquez during the broadcast of Golpe a Golpe on ESPN, and said his upcoming fight against Rojas would take place at 140 pounds and then he would go immediately to 135 pounds in search of a lightweight world title.
One fighter he would love to get in the ring with is current WBO super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko (6-1, 4KOs).
Lomachenko captured the title last month with a bruising knockout of Roman Martinez in five rounds. Garcia has an eight round stoppage win over Martinez. In his first fight at 130, Lomachenko is already talking about the possibility of heading up to 135-pounds to pursue big fights and more titles.
"Maybe at 135 pounds I can fight with Lomachenko when I am champion. If he wants to jump to 135, then I would like a fight with him. The win over Rocky was spectacular, I was impressed. We are fighters at a high level and you always want to face others at that level to see who is the best at 135. And once I'm the lightweight champion, if he wants to try his luck against me he is more than welcome," Garcia said.
"We are happy to restart my career. There were difficult moments where I had no idea how long it would be before I would return. I am young, I am 28 years old, I have never been defeated, I have never been hurt, and now I'm back and the best part of my career is to come."
