Miguel Vazquez Says: I'm a Free Agent, I Want Big Fights

By Ryan Burton

Following his impressive unanimous decision victory over Leonardo Zappavigna (25-1), IBF lightweight champion Miguel "Titere" Vazquez (28-3) advised BoxingScene.com that he was looking to make his next title defense on the undercard of the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr-Sebastian Zbik middleweight championship bout that takes place on June 4th. Vazquez's victory over Zappavigna took place on the Miguel Cotto versus Ricardo Mayorga pay-per-view undercard that took place this past March in Las Vegas.

A few weeks after that conversation it was announced that Vazquez would be fighting in Mexico on June 11th instead.  As it turns out Vazquez isn't on that card now either.  Boxingscene caught up with the 24 year old to get a time table for his ring return.  We were surprised to find out that Vazquez is a promotional free agent who is open to fielding offers from various promoters and is looking to secure the best deal possible for the next phase of his career.  The 24 year old Mexican champion is sure to be a hot commodity on the open market.  See what all Vazquez had to say in this exclusive interview found only on Boxingscene.

Boxingscene:  After your victory over Zappavigna you had mentioned that you were going to fight again on Chavez Jr's undercard.  Then we heard it was going to be on June 11th and then that was scratched.  Do you have any idea when you are getting back in the ring?

Miguel Vazquez:  That was the plan.  I have been offered a lot of fights but nothing has been official.  In reality I am a free agent and I am just looking for the best fights out there.

BS:  If your contract with Zanfer is over are you saying that you are free to fight on any promoters cards if you like the deal?

MV:  My contract has been up for a while now.  I have been waiting to see what offers come in.  I am a free agent so I want to explore them (the offers) and get the best deal possible.

BS:  You had a dominating win over Zuppavigna on a high profile pay per view event (Miguel Cotto versus Ricardo Mayorga).  Are you disappointed that you won't be back in the ring next month building on that performance?

MV:  I have been training hard.  I am always in the gym.  I have been in negotiations with Zanfer.  They want to resign me but to be quite honest with you I haven't liked the offers that they have presented to me.

BS:  Zanfer has a great relationship with Top Rank who promotes Brandon Rios.  You and Rios had been mentioned in title unification talks before.  It seems like staying with Zanfer is a good option for you as that would be a pretty big fight.

MV:  I have nothing against Zanfer or any promotional company but boxing is a business.  It is kind of like an auction.  Whoever comes up with the better deal is where I have to go.  I have to look out for my future and getting the better fights.

BS:  Do you have a time frame on when you hope to have your contract status resolved?

MV:  I hope that all of these issues can be resolved in the next week or so.  I am the IBF 135 pound champion.  I think I proved it by beating legitimate fighters in my weight class.  I want to keep proving and showing the people who Miguel Vazquez is.

BS:  Do you have a message for all the fans out there?

MV:  I want to thank them for their support.  I plan on getting back in the ring real soon after all of these issues get resolved.  I want to keep showing the people who Miguel Vazquez is and that is a great champion.

Short term obviously Top rank would be best cause they have most of the lightweight talent but long term Arum will phuk his career up.

Juan and Kats need to stay away from Miguel. Vazquez's only comp at 135 is Soto, Rios and JMM. Acosta-Vazquez could be good.
