Former IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez has continued the rebuilding process by winning an eight round unanimous decision over Javier Mercado (25-11-2) at the Arena Chololo Larios in Tonala, Jalisco, Mexico.

For Vazquez, it was his third win in a row since suffering a ten round unanimous decision loss to former champion Argenis Mendez in October of 2015. Since that defeat, he came back to win fights over Erick Bone and Armando Patino.

Vazquez wants to rebuild his career to the point where he secures another world title shot.

Vazquez' former title has changed hands several times over in the last few years.

The Mexican veteran lost the belt in September of 2013, in what many felt was a controversial twelve round split decision to Mickey Bey.

The belt would become vacant after Bey failed to make a defense. In December 2015,  Rances Barthelemy would beat Denis Shafikov to capture the vacant title. And then Barthelemy would later beat Bey to set the record straight the following year.

But then Barthelemy vacated the belt to move up in weight, which then saw Robert Easter defeat Richard Commey to capture the open title.

Easter, still the belt holder, has retained the belt against Luis Cruz and most recently Denis Shafikov.

It's not clear if Vazquez would like to secure a shot at Easter. Vazquez's last three fights have taken place in the junior welterweight limit. In fact, the bouts have had catch-weights of 144-pounds.
