Miguel Roman Returns 9/6, Eyes Castellanos, Eliminator

By Jake Donovan

Miguel “Mickey” Roman is enjoying a remarkable career turnaround, enough to where his handlers hope to cash in with a major reward in the near future.

The resurgent super featherweight contender will return to the ring on September 6, in what his team hopes will come in a title eliminator versus countryman Robinson Castellanos. The winner would be in line for a shot at 130 lb. titlist Takashi Miura.

Roman (46-11, 35KOs) has put together a string of impressive victories among a current eight-fight win streak. Included are knockout wins over former champs Juan Carlos Salgado last November and Daniel Ponce de Leon in his most recent performance this past June. Roman stopped Ponce de Leon in nine rounds, prompting the former two-division champ to formally announce his retirement soon therafter.

Meanwhile, the 28-year old contender ratchets up for at least one more title run.

“Mickey returns September 6, and we’ve just made an offer to Golden Boy Promotions to face world rated Robinson Castellanos,” confirmed Oswaldo Küchle of Promociones del Pueblo. “Hopefully we get approval today. Mickey deserves respect for his recent ring results. Wins over Ponce de Leon, Juan Carlos Salgado and Dante Jardon (Roman split a pair of fights with Jardon, scoring a split decision win and a unanimous decision loss) prove he is a tough guy to beat in the ring.”

A ring veteran of 11 years, Roman has fallen short twice at the title stage. A points loss to Jonathan Barros in 2011 came in what served as Roman’s final fight as a featherweight. Moving up the scales didn’t reap immediate benefits, dropping a wide decision loss to Javier Fortuna and suffering a knockout loss to then-lightweight titlist Antonio DeMarco in back-to-back fights.

Roman has since won nine of his past 10 fights, including a pair of knockout wins in his 2014 campaign and looking to add more before the year is out.

Promociones del Pueblo hopes for a response from Golden Boy Promotions by close of business Tuesday, but are prepared to move forward should a fight with Castellanos fail to materialize. Whomever the opponent, the fight would land on Televisa in Mexico, with a win leading to a title shot versus Miura, who has faced all Mexican super featherweights for the duration of his title reign, along with a pending mandatory challenge versus Edgar Puerta, who is also promoted by Promociones del Pueblo.

“Mickey is fighting on September 6 one way or another,” Küchle confirms. “If it’s not versus Castellanos, we will simply move forward towards another opponent. From there, he will most likely go on to face the winner of Puerta and Miura.”
