Miguel Cotto's Adviser Confirms Talks With Freddie Roach
By Miguel Rivera
Gabriel Peñagarícano, the legal adviser to former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30KOs) has confrimed that there have been preliminary discussions to establish a working relationship with trainer Freddie Roach, who trains Manny Pacquiao and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Cotto had trained for his last few fights with Cuban coach Pedro Diaz. Roach was in Pacquiao's corner when he stopped Cotto in the twelfth round in 2009.
"Yes we have had conversations with Roach, but nothing is concrete. It could be Roach or it could be another coache. But I know Freddie and I talked to him a lot with him," said Peñagarícano to Carlos Narvaez.
The adviser denied the reports which are circulating in Puerto Rico, regarding Cotto's negotiations to face WBC/WBA 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on September 14th. Golden Boy Promotions are trying to make a fight between Canelo and Floyd Mayweather Jr. but very few believe Mayweather will fight on September and expect Cotto to be the first choice for Canelo.
"Miguel has not made a decision on when he'll return, nor have we negotiated to fight Canelo," Peñagarícano said.
Moving up in weight after you lost 3 fights in a row (IMO lost to Clottey) to face Foreman and Mayorga is not testing the waters. It's called fighting tomato cans to avoid losing again and having to retire. [B]Really…Comment by jri9d0 on 05-10-2013
Mayweather definitely wont fight Canelo unless he ses him look bad against cotto. He wants cotto to fight him first so he can gauge his own safety obviously.
With few exceptions that pretty much sums up Floyd's style of approach…Comment by Rome-By-Ko on 05-10-2013
I really think this is a bad look for Cotto..If only Cotto were disciplined, there's so many fights at 147lb for him..At 154lb,Roach does not make a difference.. At 147lb Cotto has a shot at anyone not named Mayweather..With or without…Comment by Bee Keepz on 05-10-2013
Man, I guess I'm the only one who thinks this is a great fit. Cotto use to be a body snatcher, I could see him doing the same thing Pacquiao is doing on the mitts, ducking shots, and finishing with…Post a Comment - View More User Comments (68)
