Miguel Cotto: record, next fight and profile →
by Andreas Hale - After sixteen years, world titles in four weight classes and some memorable wars with some of boxing’s best, Miguel Cotto will call it a career on December 2nd when he faces Sadam Ali at Madison Square Garden in New York. It’s not quite the big name opponent that some expected – and let’s be real, Cotto was never going to fight Gennady Golovkin or Cane...
As what was widely rumored over the last couple of days was made official earlier this week. Multi-division world titleholder Miguel Cotto will end his Hall-of-Fame career on Dec. 2 against Sadam Ali, Golden Boy Promotions announced on Wednesday. Cotto will defend his WBO junior middleweight title against Sadam Ali at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The fight will air live on HBO.
December 2 will mark the end of an era in boxing as four-division and six-time world champion Miguel Cotto (41-5, 33 KOs) enters the ring for the final time to defend his WBO World Junior Middleweight Title in a 12-round battle against Sadam "World Kid" Ali (25-1, 14 KOs). The action will take place at the World's Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden, and will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. Cotto will make his 24th appearance on the network and his 10th showcase at MSG.
On Monday, three division world champion Mikey Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) explained on social media that he rejected a potential multi-million dollar deal to fight Miguel Cotto on December 2 - because the agreement would have to include a multi-fight promotional deal with Golden Boy Promotions, who work with Cotto. As it stands right now, Cotto is close to finalizing a deal to fight welterweight contender Sadam Ali, as the headline fight of an HBO televised card from Madison Square Garden in New York City.
It has been reported by various sources that WBO junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto will face United States Olympian Sadam Ali at New York's Madison Square Garden on December 2nd, in what the Puerto Rican superstar says will be the last fight of his illustrious career. "We have a verbal agreement with Sadam Ali," confirmed Eric Gomez, the president of Golden Boy Promotions, which promotes both Cotto and Ali.
Austin Trout has always wanted a chance to avenge his losses to Canelo Alvarez, Erislandy Lara and Jermall Charlo. The former WBA super welterweight champion cannot understand why Miguel Cotto never seemed to feel the same way about his lopsided loss to Trout. Nearly five years have passed since Trout made a name for himself by thoroughly out-boxing Cotto in their 12-round, 154-pound title fight at Madison Square Garden, and a rematch still hasn’t been brought up to Trout.
Mikey Garcia was more than willing to jump up two more weight classes to challenge Miguel Cotto. Garcia was not willing, however, to sign a multi-fight agreement with Cotto’s promoter just to get in the ring with the Puerto Rican legend. The unbeaten WBC lightweight champion issued a series of Tweets on Monday to address why he turned down a proposed 154-pound fight against Cotto on December 2 at Madison Square Garden.
Miguel Cotto came to the Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin fight last month in Las Vegas and openly discussed fighting the winner. It appears, though, that Cotto has chosen a far less dangerous opponent for his farewell fight. The newly crowned WBO super welterweight champion reportedly will face welterweight contender Sadam Ali on December 2 at Madison Square Garden.
Former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux is being positioned to fight in early December at Madison Square Garden in New York City. There are ongoing discussions to see Lemieux (38-3, 33 KO) collide with four division world champion Miguel Cotto (41-5, 33 KO), who headlines that event. But whether or not Lemieux and Cotto will face each other on the card or appear in separate fights is up in the air.
Golden Boy Promotions has received word that Miguel Cotto is safe and sound in Puerto Rico, which has been ravaged by the effects recent hurricanes. The events have left millions without basic necessities. Just recently they got in touch with their client. "The good news is that he's safe, we heard from him. He and his family are fine,"explained Eric Gomez, the president of Golden Boy, to BoxingScene.com. "He is going to fight in December and he's coming out next week to start his camp with Freddie Roach."
