Miguel Cotto: "I Will Return, It Was Margarito's Night"

By Mark Vester

In the aftermath of being battered and knocked out in eleven-rounds by Antonio Margarito at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Miguel Cotto said that he would continue his career and return to the ring in better form. He offered no excuses for the loss and said it was simply Margarito's night.

“This night was Margarito’s night,” said Cotto. “He did his job better than I did. Life continues. It’s not over for me. I am very proud and very happy I was able to give the fans a great fight.”

Margarito said the fight went according to plan. After he hurt Cotto in the sixth-round, he went back to his corner and told his trainer, Javier Capetillo, "I'm gonna knock him out." Capetilloo replied "I know you are, but be careful."

Margarito was hit often, but never hurt by any of Cotto's big punches. He did admit the Puerto Rican star packs some decent pop.

“At about the sixth round I felt my pressure and punches were doing some injury to Cotto,” Margarito said. “I always said that Cotto was tough and he did hit hard, but he never hurt me. I told my corner I would wear him down and then knock him out. The game plan was to come out strong and to wear him down and knock him out. I got him with body shots, and then I hit him in the head, and then knocked him out."
