As previously reported by BoxingScene.com, WBO interim super featherweight champion Miguel "El Alacrán" Berchelt (30-1 27 KOs) is slated to return to the ring on December 3rd with Puerto Rican Orlando "El Fenómeno" Cruz (24-4-1) the frontrunner to be his opponent. The date could change but Berchelt should return before the end of the year.
Berchelt captured his title with a sixth round knockout of George Jupp earlier this year. He likes the idea of facing Cruz to help build up his name as he moves his way towards bigger fights.
"Cruz is a fighter very well know in the Unite States and I believe that beating him will help bring me closer to fighting for a full world title. He thinks he can beat me and we will see if he has what it takes to defeat me," said Berchelt.
On November 26th the WBO full super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko will defend his title versus Jamaican knockout artist Nicolas Walters in a highly anticipated showdown.
Berchelt believes that beating Cruz will put him on position to face the winner in the near future.
"I like the idea of fighting Cruz because he's well known and I need to fight known names to help me get to the big fights in the United States." Berchelt told BoxingScene.com.
Cruz, who is the first openly gay professional boxer, has won five fights in a row since suffering back to back defeats against Orlando Salido and Gamalier Rodriguez.
