McDonnell Achieves Dream, Shocks Ceja For IBF Belt

Keepmoat Stadium, Doncaster, Yorkshire - Jamie McDonnell (21-2-1, 9KOs), undefeated since 2008, achieved his dream by shocking previously undefeated 20-year-old hot Mexican prospect Julio Ceja (24-1, 22KOs) with a twelve round majority decision, capturing the vacant IBF bantamweight title that was vacated by Leo Santa Cruz, who moved up to 122-pounds.  The scores were 114-114, 115-113, 118-110.

Ceja had a lot of touble with McDonnell's faster hands and constant movement. Ceja landed a few punches, but he was unable to seriously hurt McDonnell or change the tide of the fight in the first nine rounds. In the tenth, Ceja felt that he might be behind in the fight and he started swinging for the fences. Ceja was going to the head and the body, but McDonnell was taking the shots and answering back.

Ceja continued to press in the eleventh and was throwing hard shots. He managed to buckle McDonnell in the final thirty seconds, but couldn't put him down as he covered up well. Ceja continued to press in the twelfth, coming forward and looking for a knockout. In the final minute, McDonnell stood his ground and made the entire arena stand on their feet as he started trading shots with the puncher until the bell.

Veteran bantamweight Stuart Hall (15-2-1, 7KOs) got a twelve round unanimous decision ovcer Sergio Perales (22-2, 14KOs) to capture the vacant IBF-Continental championship.

Junior welterweight Jamie Sampson (8-0) picked up six round decision victory over Lee Connelly (2-2). The sole score was 59-56.

Heavyweight prospect Carl Spencer (3-0, 3KOs) picked up his third straight stoppage victory with a second round TKO of Ferenc Zsalek.
