Floyd Mayweather Sr., father and trainer of five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26KOs), believes his son will fight again in the future - at least once - to break the 49-0 record of heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano.
Mayweather retired a year ago, after dominating former welterweight champion Andre Berto over twelve rounds at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. After few months after that fight, he vacated his WBC/WBA world titles at welterweight and junior middleweight.
During several recent interviews, Mayweather made it clear that he was done with the sport and focusing his energy on signing talent to his promotional company.
While nothing is for certain, Mayweather Sr. has a good feeling that his son will resurface in the ring - likely in 2017.
"Well, you know, I’m here to tell you that I don’t know. But me, myself, I do believe that he will come back and have one more fight. I mean, I’m not saying so much as just to fight, I’m talking about breaking Rocky Marciano’s record. I think he can do it," Mayweather Sr. told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
Because his son is nearly 40-years-old, the opponent must be selected very carefully. Since the start of the year, there have been several names mentioned for a possible Mayweather return, including current world champions and even some unlikely opponents like UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. Whoever the comeback opponent might be, Mayweather Sr. plans to thoroughly scout him before a deal is finalized.
"Of course its about picking the right fight. That would be something that me and him would have to do. We would have to check him out. The individual that were looking for to fight, we’d have to put a check in on him," Mayweather Sr. said.
