Discussions are ongoing for a fight between the second-ranked featherweight under the World Boxing Council (WBC), Puerto Rico's Jayson 'La Maravilla' Velez (22-0, 16KOs), and WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (56-8, 47KOs), for September 13th at the MGM Grand of Las Vegas. The Showtime Pay-Per-View main event is a rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana.

Hector Soto of Miguel Cotto Promotions, is the co-promoter of Velez. He is handling the negotiations. Promoter Pepe Gomez of Cancun Boxing is also holding talks for Cristian Mijares to get Gonzalez, but Showtime is more interested in Velez.

"We are in negotiations. We are in negotiations to fight on September 13 with Jhonny Gonzalez. But the talks are just beginning. Cristian Mijares has also been mentioned [for Gonzalez], but we understand that Mijares is not as attractive at this time for the people of Showtime, who are going to be in charge of televising the show. By Monday we may have a clearer picture," Soto said to Carlos Narvaez.
Floyd should have more young Americans on his undercard.
If the Velez fight is approved, he won't have any young Americans on the card. He'll have two "Native Americans" on the card which will bring in more interest.. :biggthump PRPP:boxing:

I like this fight. Open up with LSC, follow with this fight, and give us a SHO Championship Boxing main event-level co-feature.

I hope they get this fight done, to see if one of Cotto's boxing stable gets him his first world champion as a promoter.. Which I also think Jayson Velez is his best chance to have a champion right now...About the fight I think JVelez has the skills to upset JGonzales. They both to me have simil...
