If retired former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26KOs) had a say in the matter, he would NOT allow Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (48-1-1, 34KOs) to face Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (36-0, 33KOs) - at least not right now.
There are ongoing discussions for Golovkin and Canelo to face each other next September. Mayweather believes Canelo's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, is making the right decision in terms of holding off until next year.
Golovkin was in action last month, when he traveled over to the UK and stopped Kell Brook to retain the WBA/WBC/IBF/IBO middleweight titles. Canelo also fought last month, when he packed the AT&T Stadium to score a knockout win over Liam Smith to capture the WBO junior middleweight title.
Mayweather would rather see Golovkin come up to 168-pounds to face WBC super middleweight world champion Badou Jack, who Mayweather promotes.
"I'm here to come on record and say this...... if Canelo was my fighter, under my banner, I wouldn't let him fight Triple G right now. Im a promoter and I see the business side. You must build a fight and build a fight. But we don't mind Triple G coming up to 168 to fight a tuneup bout [with WBC super middleweight champion Badou Jack]... well, it's really not a tuneup bout. It's going to be a hell of a fight. We got a guy right [in Jack] who is a solid boxer, a good chin, hard worker. Triple G is a guy who comes straight-forward. I want the fans to vote. Vote for this fight to happen and then I'll try to talk to Oscar to see if the Canelo and Triple G fight can happen," Mayweather told a group of reporters after his company staged a show in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
