Lonnie Smith Wants Gavin Rees, On Sparring R. Guerrero

•Apr 15, 2013

In a fight that flew under the radar, Las Vegas resident Lonnie Smith made a return to the ring last month as he met up with once-beaten Michael Perez on the Bernard Hopkins-Tavoris Cloud undercard from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. This was a crucial fight for Smith, as he was coming off of back-to-back losses to Vicente Escobedo in March of last year and to Mason Menard three months later. And despite getting dropped by Perez in the second round, Smith showed much fortitude, rising and eventually working his way back into the fight. Several ringside accounts had Smith in control of the action in the seventh round before the fight was stopped after a clash of heads caused a nasty cut on Perez’s forehead. The bout went to the cards, where the fight was declared a majority draw, with Smith’s ledger shifting to 14-4-3 with 10 knockouts. And despite not getting the victory he so craved, you can tell that Smith again has his spirits back as he eyes a run in the lightweight division.

Having been spending my share of time inside of the Mayweather Boxing Club the past few weeks, I felt the need to again start branching out and hitting up some other gyms in the Las Vegas area in an effort to give some exposure to prospects in the city. On Wednesday afternoon I paid a visit to the Pound 4 Pound Gym and linked up with lightweight prospect Jesus ‘Chuy’ Gutierrez, one of the most popular talents in the city. As down to earth of a guy as you will find, Gutierrez has been making his bones in recent years by sparring the likes of Jessie Vargas, Mickey Bey, and the Magdaleno brothers while also appearing on several Top Rank undercards.

Mayweather Sr. Discusses Being in Camp With Floyd

As he enters his 44th professional bout, there is again a special kind of aura in the camp of Floyd Mayweather. Readying himself for a May 4th defense of his WBC welterweight crown against interim champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, Mayweather seems as focused as ever heading into what looks to be the final championship run of his career. That doesn’t mean that a few things in camp haven’t changed, however, as some faces have left the scene while others have reemerged. For the Guerrero fight, Mayweather’s father Floyd Sr. has thus far played an instrumental role in his training by simply overseeing his son’s work and offering up his own personal advice and insight while inside of the gym.

According to the World Boxing Council, WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26KOs) weighed in at 148.2-pounds on April 4th, as part of the organization's 30-day weigh-in requirement. By this point, Mayweather is likely less than a pound away from the welterweight limit. As BoxingScene.com previously reported, mandatory challenger Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (31-1-1, 18KOs) weighed in at 159-pounds when the WBC conducted their 30-day weight check. The fight takes place on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Showtime Pay-Per-View will carry the event.

Mayweather: The Fight is Sold Already Because of Me!

The build up to a Floyd Mayweather fight wouldn’t be complete without a pre-fight series documenting his and his opponent’s life and training leading up to their showdown. Floyd may have left HBO for Showtime but Mr. 24/7 is now Mr. All Access and nothing’s changed but the name of the show. One thing that is different however is his opponent as Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero is the latest boxer to get a chance to dethrone Mayweather and collect a lucrative pay day in the process. Episode one of All Access opens up with both fighters claiming why they will be victorious and why the other has no chance. For Floyd, there’s no blue print to beat him. For Robert, it’s questioning his 36 year old opponent’s legs.

The referee for the May 4 welterweight title fight between Floyd Mayweather and Robert Guerrero at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas will be Robert Byrd. Byrd was selected at the April 8 meeting of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The other candidates to be the third man in the ring for that bout were Kenny Bayless, Vic Drakulich and Tony Weeks. The judges, meanwhile, will be Duane Ford and Jerry Roth of Nevada, and Julie Lederman of New York. The other candidates to score that bout were Burt Clements, Richard Houck, Patricia Morse Jarman, C.J. Ross and Glenn Trowbridge of Nevada, Don Griffin of Texas, and Michael Pernick of Florida. There were no objections to these names from either fighter’s camp. Byrd has not been the referee for any of Mayweather’s previous fights, according to BoxRec.com. That website shows Byrd as being the ref in Guerrero’s 2006 fight with Orlando Salido and his 2003 stoppage win over Jose Luis Tula.
