WBO/WBC/WBA welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. has earned a payday - in a single fight - that superstars like Oscar De La Hoya and Mike Tyson spent an entire career putting together.
Only a few weeks have passed since his mega-fight with Manny Pacquiao, which Mayweather won with a twelve round unanimous decision. The officials scored it 118-110, 116-112, 116-112.
The fight broke the pay-per-view record that Mayweather set in 2007 for his clash with Oscar De La Hoya, which generated 2.48 million purchases. The PPV with Pacquiao has already brought in 4.4 million buys.
Reportedly the fight is going to bring in revenue around the $500 million mark.
Mayweather, who stands to make over $200 million from the fight, says the finalized numbers are going to be even larger. Based on the information that he's been provided, the pay-per-view buyrate may rise to over 5 million, and the event revenue may jump to nearly $700 million.
One thing is for sure, there will not be a financial success like this for many years.
"All of the full stats have not come in yet. As of right now we are somewhere over 4 and a half million [pay-per-view buys]. I think that when it's all said and done we should be at 5.2 million [buys]. And then also with the overseas [revenue] and everything, and merchandise - I think we have a possibulity of reaching $700 million [total revenue]," Mayweather told DJ. Whoo Kid on Shade 45 Radio.
