Matthysse's Trainer: We Wanted Garcia, But Got Ortiz

By Ben Jacobs

Luis ‘Cuty’ Barrera is currently overseeing sparring between his charge Lucas Matthysse (35-3, 33 KOs) and fellow countryman Luis Carlos Abregú (36-1, 29 KOs) in Junín, Argentina.  Matthysse and his camp fly to the United States on August 30 for their fight with Mexican banger, Roberto Ortíz (31-0-1, 24 KOs).

Barrera told BoxingScene that although he sees Ortíz as a good opponent who punches hard, he would have preferred a rematch with Danny García instead.

“We wanted to fight García, we’re in good shape and Lucas wants to fight for the world title but Golden Boy is the boss and they want us to fight Roberto Ortiz," Barrera said.

“I think that he [García] is doing his thing over there in the US, and we’re far away in Argentina.  It seems he doesn’t want to fight us again, I respect his decision.”

The fight with Ortiz takes place on a Showtime televised date of September 6th from Cincinnati, Ohio.

It amazes me how so many fans...novice i should add actually believe that just because a challenger looses a fight that he is automatically entitled to a re-match. If the Champion wants it thats a different story but this schoolyard…
