Lucas Matthysse has finally arrived in the United States as he will be facing one of his toughest challenges when he squares off against Lamont Peterson in a highly anticipated fight for Junior Welterweight supremacy this Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ.
Matthysse is regarded by many to be the best and most dangerous fighter in the 140 pound division and being able to beat a fighter like Peterson will go a long way to confirming that. The winner of this fight is also scheduled to face reigning WBC Junior Welterweight champion Danny Garcia later this year in September. Matthysse currently holds the interim WBC belt and is Garcia’s mandatory challenger.
Matthysse was on the most recent edition of BoxingScene Radio and was asked if his ultimate goal was to land a fight with Garcia and be able to attain the full WBC championship.
“Yes, for sure. That's the fight I'm looking for and the fight that will come after this one if I win. So the truth is I'm looking for the fight with Danny Garcia and also because he's an excellent fighter and he's one of the best in the division. So for those reasons I want to fight him so I can be the absolute full champion in the division” Matthysse would tell BoxingScene Radio.
Much like his fight with Peterson, many fans believe a fight with Matthysse and Garcia would be a tremendous match up and produce an all out war. With Garcia being a possible opponent for him, Matthysse was asked to give his thoughts on Danny who is often doubted but has continued to win and remain undefeated.
“He's a fighter who looks to have a heavy punch. I would love to face him because I know I can beat him. He's fought against fighters lately that are already on their last fights and honestly it would be good if he faced me because I'm a young fighter and I want the glory and to win. But yes, he's a good fighter. I didn't think he looked too good in his last fight. He looked a bit slow to me and Zab Judah gave him a lot of problems. I don't see him as the best fighter in the division” said Matthysse.
While the Argentinean would love nothing more than to fight Garcia, he assures he is not looking over Peterson. He understands nothing can happen if he does not take care of this bout first and believes Peterson will give him a great fight.
