Argentinean puncher Lucas Matthysse is hoping that eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao makes good on his recent call-out and the two of them fight each other.
Last month, Matthysse secured an eight round TKO of Tewa Kiram at The Forum in Los Angeles. With that victory, he captured the 'regular' version of the WBA welterweight title.
Afterwards, Matthysse (39-4, 36 KOs) named Pacquiao as one of the top targets on his list of potential opponents this year.
Earlier this week, Pacquiao (59-7-2, 38 KO's) expressed his own desire to fight Matthysse in the coming days.
“I want Matthysse,” Pacquiao told the Manila Bulletin during a break in his Senate duties.
“This is the fight that I like… a fight fans would also like to see. I can fight in April or even May."
After hearing what Pacquiao had stated, Matthysse told reporters that he's crossing his fingers.
"I hope the Pacquiao fight happens for me," Matthysse stated.
Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez stated to BoxingScene.com that his company wouldn't stand in the way of Matthysse heading over to ESPN, where Pacquiao is contractually bound, to do the fight.
However, Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum told BoxingScene that he doesn't see that fight happening.
He intends to match Pacquiao against former champion Mike Alvarado on April 14 as part of an ESPN Pay-Per-View from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Pacquiao has not fought since losing the WBO welterweight belt to Jeff Horn on July 1st at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia.
“I see he has talked about fighting Matthysse,” Arum said to BoxingScene. “But that's not gonna happen.”
Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach. is also on board with the contest and recently stated that to one of Matthysse's trainers.
"I love that fight, one of his trainers was here the other day," said Roach to BoxingScene.com.
"I took [his trainer] downstairs [at the Wild Card Boxing Club], I gave him the tour a little bit, he pointed at a picture of Pacquiao and said, 'We want him' and I said, 'I would love for you to have him.'"
"I think it's a great fight, two guys who are a little bit older and not as big of punchers as they once were but it's a very good action-packed fight."
