Matthysse: Hopefully The Winner Will Get Mayweather

By Luis Sandoval

When Lucas Matthysse and Danny Garcia square off on September 14th they will be fighting for more than just titles and the right to be called the best in the division; they will also be fighting for a chance to be the next in line to face Floyd Mayweather.

The stakes are definitely high in this fight for both fighters and it will all be sorted out on the biggest stage either guy has ever been on. Being on such a huge platform is after all the reason this fight was added to this card. The winner - and even the loser -will get maximum exposure and for some casual fans, this will be their first introduction to both fighters. That’s vital in building Mayweather’s next opponent and what better way to familiarize the general audience with them than having them fight on one of the biggest fight cards in recent memory.

Matthysse was a guest on BoxingScene Radio and was asked for his thoughts regarding possibly facing Mayweather should he win and how exactly he would fight the undefeated pound for pound king.

“Yes, that's what I've been hearing that whoever wins this fight will be Floyd Mayweather's next opponent. I would be proud to fight Mayweather. To beat him, yes, it would be very difficult. You have to be well trained and throw punches and more punches. I think other fighters respect him too much. It must be very difficult fighting against him by the way he moves and his form but you have to do good work and hit him in the arms [and] the body. I think that's the key. I would be very proud to fight with him and hopefully the winner of this fight gets that fight” Matthysse would tell BoxingScene Radio.

While both Matthysse and Garcia currently campaign one weight class south of where Mayweather normally fights, Matthysse informs he’d have no trouble moving up immediately should he get the opportunity.

“Yes, it all depends like I was saying if we are able to get the fight with Floyd Mayweather. If so, then yes, I'd go up. But as of right now, making weight isn't hard. After winning this fight I'd like to make a title defense and after that we'd sign up and go to the next weight class” said the Argentinean.

While Matthysse is definitely interested in fighting Mayweather, he’s solely concentrated on Danny Garcia at the moment. Training has already started for Matthysse as his showdown with Garcia is less than two months away.

Garcia, please son go to the body. That is where the battle will be won. Chaves, Maidana, they couldn't/can't take it to the body. Matthysse hates bodyshots too. He tries to smile them off. Disregard that aggravating crooked toothed smirk…
