Matthysse Aims For Garcia Rematch, Eyes Move To 147

By Luis Sandoval

Lucas Matthysse makes his long awaited return to the ring this Saturday night against big puncher John Molina as they will serve as the co-main event in Carson, CA at the Stub Hub Center.

Matthysse is coming off a tough loss against WBC and WBA Junior Welterweight champion Danny Garcia this past September where many had picked the Argentinean to win the divisional showdown. However, after suffering a swollen eye and a knockdown late in the fight, Matthysse came up short and it was Garcia who remained undefeated as he scored one of the biggest victories of his career.

While Matthysse isn’t looking past Molina, one thing he does want should he be victorious is another crack at Garcia.

“Yes, I already asked for the rematch [with Garcia] after the fight and I will continue to ask for it. I hope he gives it to me” Matthysse would tell BoxingScene.

Garcia has informed that he will fight one more time at 140 pounds and then make a move north to the stacked Welterweight division. BoxingScene asked Matthysse if he’d be willing to chase Garcia into another division in order to make the fight happen.

“Yes, yes. After this year I plan to go up to 147 [as well]”.

The plan for Matthysse regardless if he’s able to land a Garcia rematch is to fight for a world title in his next fight. He has to get past Molina but feels his next fight should be for a championship.

“Hopefully after this fight I get Danny Garcia but if not, I’d want to still fight for a title” said Matthysse.

While there aren’t many options for him to choose from at the moment since Golden Boy and Top Rank are still sorting out their differences, Matthysse was asked if he’d be willing to rematch Lamont Peterson in order to get the title shot that he covets.

“Yes, maybe, I’m not sure. I’d like to fight with Garcia first” said Matthysse with a smile.
