WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez gives his countryman Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31KOs), the WBA's welterweight champion, a good shot to upset his WBC counterpart in Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26KOs), who is regarded as the pound-for-pound king.
On December 14th, Maidana upset the odds and shook up the scene when he pulled off a twelve round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Adrien Broner, who Mayweather considers a close personal friend.
Mayweather has a return date on May 3rd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. For years Martinez tried to secure a fight with Mayweather, but now realizes that fight will never happen. Martinez would like to see Maidana in the ring with Mayweather and disagrees with the popular opinion that Floyd would have an easy time with the Argentine hitter.
"The Floyd Mayweather fight was always a longshot [for me]. He picks the opponents he wants and fights with children, so I don't believe that fight will happen [for me]. Maidana? I would like to see Maidana in there with Mayweather. Maidana is above those other [possibilities] and it would not be an easy fight for Mayweather," Martinez said to Carlos Irusta.Tags: Floyd Mayweather Jr. , Sergio Martinez , Marcos Maidana
