This weekend, the world’s lineal middleweight champion, Sergio Martinez, will face off with Birmingham's Matthew Macklin inside of the Theatre at Madison Square Garden in an HBO-televised showcase.

By Jake Donovan - The last time Matthew Macklin hit the road was also the last time he stepped foot in a boxing ring. Needless to say, the past nine months have been filled with anxious moments and bitter memories. “I beat Felix Sturm from pillar to post,” Macklin (28-3, 18KO) said of last June’s middleweight title challenge, in which he traveled all the way to Germany only to land on the wrong end of one of the worst decisions of the year. “Anyone who saw that fight knows it was a bad decision.” Having not fought since then, it’s fair to question why the UK-based boxer would cross the Atlantic to fight Sergio Martinez this weekend in New York City. Macklin will be thousands of miles of home, facing the best middleweight in the world without the benefit of a confidence builder in between. Perhaps a fair response would be that Macklin and his handlers gained all the confidence they needed in winning last year’s title challenge in every way but officially. “It wasn’t just a victory, it was an ass-whooping,” noted Lou DiBella, never one to mix words. The New York-based promoter signed Macklin to a promotional contract soon after the Sturm robbery.

Middleweight king Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27KOs), and Russian heavyweight Magomed Abdusalamov (13-0, 13KOs), continue to train hard in Oxnard, California with their mutual trainer Pablo Sarmiento. Both fighters return on March 17th at New York's Madison Square Garden. Mago faces Jason Pettaway (11-0, 8KOs) on the undercard, while Martinez takes on Matthew Macklin (28-3, 19KOs) in the main event. Photos by Josh Mcdaniel/AllBoxing.ru

The first training diary went down well last month so I think a second diary entry is probably overdue at this point with the fight now less than 2 weeks away.

Birmingham middleweight Matthew Macklin says he is ignoring the hype around Sergio Martinez and is sure he has the measure of the Argentine. Macklin, 29, meets Martinez, the recognized champion at 160-pounds, in New York on the 17th of March and says he cannot wait for it. Martinez, 37, is widely considered to be among the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world and Macklin knows he has to be at his best.

Irish boxer Matthew Macklin was training hard at New York's Trinity Boxing Club, with trainer Buddy McGirt watching on. Macklin is scheduled to face middleweight king Sergio Martinez, from Argentina, in a middleweight bout, on Saturday, March 17, at Madison Square Garden.

NEW YORK - DiBella Entertainment has announced a solid undercard supporting the Sergio Martinez vs. Matthew Macklin card, entitled "THE REAL Middleweight Championship - Get Your Irish Up", on March 17 (St. Patrick's Day), in The Theater at Madison Square Garden.
