Sampson Lewkowicz, adviser to middleweight king Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28KOs), is giving Andy Lee (28-1, 20KOs) a very good shot to upset WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (45-0, 31KOs) on June 16th at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.
The three fighters, including their promoters, have signed an official WBC document which grants Martinez an immediate shot at the June winner. Martinez would likely face the winner in September, but Lewkowicz isn't concerned with the date.
If Lee pulls off the upset, Lewkowicz is considering the idea of placing Martinez-Lee in a soccer stadium in Argentina. Lewkowicz is confident Martinez's superstar status in Argentina will generate a sold-out event.
"Keep in mind, Andy Lee is coming to fight and he does have a good chance to win the fight. If Andy Lee wins, we would like to make the fight with Sergio Martinez in Argentina. Martinez will sell out any venue in the country. Martinez will fight in the winner of Chavez-Lee in September, but the actual date is not the most important thing. The fight could happen in October or November, because we need enough time to properly promote the event," Lewkowicz told BoxingScene.com.
