Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez suffered a slight injury on Thursday afternoon and had to stop his training sessions.

The future Hall of Famer expects to return back to the gym next week. Marquez plans to continue at the Romanza gym in Mexico, where he intends to have three weeks of strong preparation to determine whether or not he moves forward with a final professional fight.

Marquez has been inactive, and dealing with a nagging knee issue, since a twelve round decision win over Mike Alvarado in May of 2014.

Marquez, who turns 43-years-old in August, returned to the gym to test his body for a potential fight against fellow former four division world champion Miguel Cotto, on a date in September or November, according to a statement by the future Hall of Famer.

"I could not go today to the gym. I've had almost three weeks of training with no problems, but I had a problem with my left ankle yesterday. I hurt it, it was a slight sprain, but that is not going to stop me. Next week I hope to return and continue with three weeks of preparation before making a decision on whether or not I'm going to return," Marquez told ESPN Deportes.

Hall of Fame trainer Nacho Beristain will support Marquez's decision - either way he goes. He likes the idea of the fight with Cotto, but at the same time he would like to see the veteran retire from the sport.

"The plan is the same. We have not negotiated anything with Cotto because I have not decided on anything, but the intention is to fight him in September, which I would love to do, or if not [in September] then [we can do it] in November. That would be a good time for boxing, but there is still nothing decided on right now," Marquez told Golpe a Golpe.
