World Boxing Council President Maurcio Sulaiman has revealed that the WBC's Board of Governors has voted in favor of approving Abner Mares vs. Leo Santa Cruz for the WBC's Diamond title. The featherweight fight takes place on August 29th from the Staples Center in Los Angeles California.

Santa Cruz, a world champion in two divisions and current WBC super bantamweight champion will finally collide with Mares, a former world champion in three divisions, as the headline fight of a Premier Boxing Champions card on ESPN.

The two boxers were scheduled to face each other a long time ago, but Mares suffered an unexpected setback when he was stopped in the first round of his August 2013 title defense against Jhonny Gonzalez.

"The WBC is honored to be part of this great event and we wish both of them the best of luck," Sulaiman said.
