Mares Would Not Rule Out a First Defense With Terrazas

By Miguel Rivera

Last Saturday in El Paso, Guadalajara's Abner Mares (24-0-1 13 KOs) captured the vacant WBC super bantamweight title with a dominating twelve round unanimous decision over Puerto Rican veteran Eric Morel. While Mares wants to secure a unification with Nonito Donaire (28-0-1 18 KOs) - the WBC's silver champion at super bantamweight, Victor "El Vikingo" Terrazas (33-2-1, 19KOs), wants his earned opportunity to fight for the full championship.

Since suffering a ninth round TKO loss to Rendall Munroe in 2010, Terraras won his next eight bouts - which includes wins over Nehomar Cermeno and Fernando Montiel.

"Victor is certainly deserving [of a shot]. He's fought the best, and his last fight [against Jose Palma] was spectacular. Certainly it would be a great battle between two fighters from Guadalajara," said Mares to Ana Betancourt.

Mares will now take a two week break. He plans to travel to Mexico City and Guadalajara before returning to training camp.

Good fight. I wanted Donaire to fight either Nishioka or Rigondeaux, but a fight with Terrazas was also pretty good since Terrazas is big and strong, and just beat Montiel in good fashion, but hey Nonito is going to fight…
