Richard Schaefer, CEO for Golden Boy Promotions, advised BoxingScene.com that an interesting tripleheader is possible for April 21st, on Showtime. Locations under consideration include Mexico City, Cancun, and the United States.
IBF bantamweight champion Abner Mares (23-0-1, 13KOs) is already confirmed for the Showtime date. Schaefer would like to add WBA bantamweight champion Anselmo "Chemito" Moreno (32-1-1, 11KOs), and former champion Jorge Linares (31-2, 2OKs).
Mares returns from a dominating twelve round unanimous decision over Joseph Agbeko last December. On that same card, which took place at Anaheim's Honda Center, Moreno made his American debut with a statement-making decision win over Vic Darchinyan.
Linares would return for the first time since last October's TKO loss to Antonio DeMarco. Linares-DeMarco stole the show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Although Linares was well ahead on the scorecards, he was unable to prevent a late charge from DeMarco. A rematch has been ordered by the WBC, but DeMarco has the option to make a voluntary defense before fulfilling that obligation.
"Abner Mares will be fighting on April the 21st. We sat down with his team, this week. We are looking at potential opponents. It could be part of a tripleheader, with Anselmo Moreno also on it, and Jorge Linares," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.
