After attending Saturday’s night card at Staples Center in Los Angeles, Marcos Maidana wants the opportunity to fill the open spot by facing WBA 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on September 15.

“It was a great card. Great wins from Lucas Matthysse and Josesito Lopez. Now it’s my turn and I want it to be against Canelo Alvarez. That’s the opponent I want,” Maidana said.

After Victor Ortiz's upset loss against Josesito Lopez, Maidana knows the window was left open for a worthy foe for Canelo and he wants to jump right at it.

“All I say is they are looking for a fight for Canelo and I want Canelo. I told that to Oscar de la Hoya in person last night. I know some might say that he’s too big for me and I say I like the challenge because Canelo likes to fight and so do I. Styles make fights and it would be a war. A war that I can win,” Maidana added.

“I feel like I need vindication from the loss against Devon Alexander. And vindication can only be achieved by getting great victories against great opponents. Regardless of the weight I know I can knock Canelo out. I like the toughest challenges,” Maidana added.

I'm good, lost at 140, got trashed at 147, wants to get mangled at 154, I'm good.

Big Maidana fan but I don't think its a smart idea unless he is just looking for the payday. His power didn't seem to go up with him at 147 and that is really all he has going for him. Well, that and his fighting spirit. I can't see it being any different at 154. His punches will just bounce off ...

Probably going over old ground here but... no. Maidana's a beast at 140, looked bloated and slow at 147, I dread to think how bad he'd look at 154. It bugs me that some of you are rooting for it, possibly Canelo fans looking for some sort of scalp. Well it wouldn't be a scalp, it would be a JMW f...
