Marcos "El Chino" Maidana is potentially going to return to the ring on a December date, at the legendary Luna Park Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After his eight round TKO over Jesus Soto Karass on September 15 in Las Vegas, "El Chino" ( 32-3, 29 KOs) expressed his desire to fight in Argentina. And now it appears that wish will come true.
"After the fight with Jesus Soto Karass, 'El Chino' asked if he could fight in Argentina in December. We checked with Golden Boy Promotions to see if there was a fight in the United States," said Maidana's adviser Sebastian Contursi to BoxingScene.com's Carlos Irusta.
"As Golden Boy did not believe that there was anything [in the near future], we then moved forward with Stephen Livera, the manager of Luna Park, and we are close to closing a deal. If all goes well, next week we could be confirming the bout in December. Marcos is eager to fight in Argentina. He is known in the U.S., but if given the chance he loves to fight before his people."
Contursi also denied rumors that Maidana was being lined up for fights against WBC 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and junior welterweight Lucas Matthysse.
"There has never been a concrete offer to fight either. Canelo is too big. And Lucas is very solid at super lightweight, and 'El Chino' can no longer make that weight. Today, the weight would be the problem. Marcos can not get down to 140 pounds, and Lucas seems very comfortable there. Unless there could be a catch-weight, but why speculate when there is nothing."
