BoxingScene previously reported that Cuban heavyweight Luis "The Real King Kong" Ortiz (21-0) will trade punches against Lateef "Power" Kayode (20-0) for the interim WBA heavyweight title on September 11th at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada in a fight televised by Fox Sports 1. Also on the card, undefeated junior middleweights Julian Williams and Elizier Gonzalez will clash and that fellow unbeaten junior middleweight Jermall Charlo will also see action.
Ortiz has never gone more than eight rounds and Kayode represents a step up in class for the highly decorated former amateur champion.
Jay Jimenez, manager of Ortiz, took a shot at Mike Perez who recently lost a split decision on HBO and appeared in less than elite physical condition.
"This 6'4" Cuban southpaw is a skilled heavyweight and is no pizza eating Mike Perez. He's got his eyes on [Deontay] Wilder and not [Wladimir] Klitschko because he says Klitschko will never want to face a hard hitting, skilled southpaw. Klitschko only likes to pick on blown up cruiserweights," Jimenez told BoxingScene.com.
