The boxing world was buzzing when news broke on Friday that Golden Boy Promotions and longtime business partner Al Haymon were going their separate ways.
A large portion of Haymon's stable was fighting under Golden Boy, but many of those fighters were not contractually bound to the company.
The terms of their separation were not revealed, but many of Golden Boy's biggest names (or at least the names which headlined their cards in recent years) are leaving with Haymon - like Danny Garcia, Adrien Broner, Deontay Wilder, Robert Guerrero, Keith Thurman, Errol Spence, Peter Quillin, Danny Jacobs and even Marcos Maidana. Only four of Haymon's fighters will remain with Golden Boy, because those fighters have actual promotional contracts with Oscar De La Hoya's company.
Maidana's adviser, Sebastian Contursi, discussed the separation between his fighter and Golden Boy.
"Actually, the contract between Golden Boy Promotions and Maidana ended with the fights against Mayweather. In parallel we have a contract with our adviser Al Haymon, which remains in force. Therefore, technically, it can be said that Maidana has no promotional contract. Haymon 100% fulfilled his promises of fights and certainly his incorporation has been crucial for the path of Maidana," said Sebastian to ESPN Deportes.
"We were on good terms with Golden Boy. In fact, despite the progress made by the 'Chino' it was not always the easiest [relationship], and there were moments, like against Amir Khan for example - where we felt that Englishman was the favorite [for Golden Boy] but both boxers are with Golden Boy. We must be grateful to promoter Oscar de la Hoya. Thanks to them ...Oscar, Richard Schaefer, Eric Gomez, Robert Diaz, Monica Sears, Ramiro Gonzalez - Maidana was able to start growing in the major leagues of boxing. Consequently, our doors are always open to working with them again if the occasion arises."
