By Jake Donovan - Does a fight between Marcos Maidana and Erik Morales really need an interim title at stake? After all, it’s a given that the fight –and card in general - is one big interim event, one that comes with a price tag for the television viewer, no less. ‘Tis the season for water-treading boxing events. It seems that the NCAA Final Four and the start of Major League Baseball always bring out the worst in boxing. Last year, it was Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones putting fans to sleep with a years-too-late rematch that went in with minimal expectations and still managed to fall way short. The year prior, HBO decided it was a good idea to have Winky Wright return from a 21-month hiatus to fight Paul Williams in Las Vegas on Easter weekend. This year, we get a top contender and one of the toughest outs in his division taking on one of the sport’s bravest warriors in recent history, albeit one well past his prime and whom hasn’t won a relevant fight in more than five years. But that win for Morales came on March 19, 2005 against Manny Pacquiao. It was the last time that Pacquiao lost a prize fight, having since went on to become the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world and also its box office king. Because Morales is the last to hang a loss on the legendary Filipino, any fight in which he engages comes with a built-in tagline. For example: This weekend at the MGM Grand

Erik "El Terrible" Morales wants more than anything to make history on Saturday when he faces Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. With the interim-WBA 140-pound title on the line, Morales wants to become the first Mexican boxer to win titles in four weight divisions. Morales is a former super bantamweight, featherweight and super featherweight champion. Maidana, 27-years-old, has 29 wins, 27 knockouts and two defeats. Morales, at 34, has a record of 51-6 and 35 knockouts.

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - I’ve never met him… but I’m sure he’s a terrific guy. And there’s no question he’s been a terrific fighter for the majority of an 18-year pro career. Even in an era of multiple world champions wearing dubious tags like interim, super, recess and emeritus alongside their names, it’s still no small feat when someone claims a share of the legitimate title-claimant pie in one weight class – let alone three, as he’s done. Such is the respect due to a veteran like Erik Morales. But reality is reality. And regardless of gaudy resume, there’s no way the future Hall of Famer known as “El Terrible” belongs anywhere near a championship-level prize ring this weekend. Though his Saturday night bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas is for one of those bogus tags created by the alphabets to siphon sanctioning fees, the guy he’s in the ring with – rugged Argentine slugger Marcos Maidana – is far from an inconsequential punch line.

I made the mistake of asking legendary matchmaker/agent Johnny Bos if he gave faded Mexican boxing icon Erik "El Terrible" Morales a chance in his Saturday night PPV TV fight against hard-charging Argentinian brawler Marcos Rene Maidana.

BoxingScene.com has been informed by David Itskowitch, COO for Golden Boy Promotions, that this Saturday's main event between Erik Morales and Marcos Maidana will have the vacant interim-WBA junior welterweight title at stake. The event headlines a Golden Boy Promotions pay-per-view at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Question before the jury is what aging underdog, 34 year old Mexcian icon Erik Morales or 39 year old perennial American star Sugar Shane Mosley, has a better chance to beat his heavily favored foe in their upcoming bouts?

Junior welterweight Marcos Rene Maidana (29-2, 27KOs) is ready for a war. He face Mexican icon Erik Morales (51-6, 35KOs) on Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Maidana takes nothing away from Morales, even though experts believe Morales is a shell of his former self. Maidana is training to go the full distance. Although, the puncher from Argentina doesn't expect a long fight because of their fighting styles.
