Marcos “Chino” Maidana is starting to peak in camp as there are only 2 weeks left before his big fight with Floyd “Money” Mayweather on May 3rd in Las Vegas. Maidana sparred 12 hard rounds Wednesday afternoon as he rotated 3 sparring partners and looks to be hitting his stride and gearing up for a strong finish.

Maidana will need to deal with Mayweather’s hard to crack defense in order to land his big power shots. Most feel he may have been well prepared to deal with Floyd based on his last fight with Adrien Broner who uses a similar style as Mayweather.

Maidana however feels there are no real similarities between both fighters and is solely concentrated on Mayweather as Broner is out of his mind.

“Many people think Broner is the same as Mayweather but one has nothing to do with the other. Broner is a different boxer. Broner’s style is the same but just with the defensive guard. Floyd comes forward, walks and boxes and I already forgot about Broner. I’m totally concentrated on the fight with Floyd and watching video on how he fights and nothing else. We’re doing good preparation,” said Maidana.

The reigning WBA Welterweight champion has been hit by a whirlwind of media demands as a fight of this magnitude brings a whole new level of attention. Maidana has been part of big fights before but none have come close to matching the size of this bout.

It’s taken a little bit of getting used to but Maidana is adapting to it much like he has previous fights.

“I always adjust because each fight is bigger and bigger. I fought with Victor Ortiz and Amir Khan and they were all boxers that I kept going up in terms of levels. That’s helped me adjust to all the cameras. For example, this fight is just bigger than all the other ones I had and I have to adapt. Just like I adapted to all the others I will do the same with Mayweather. He’s not an extraterrestrial boxer or from another world; he’s a common [fighter],” said Maidana after a vigorous training session.

Maidana is working hard in the gym and especially with Alex Ariza as he points to great conditioning being important when facing a fighter like Mayweather. Maidana will look to make May 3rd his moment and shock the world.
